Sculpture with note exchange
2003; Atlantic Center for the Arts, New Smyrna Beach FL
Chicken wire, palm fronds, aluminum screening, tape, plastic cups, written notes from viewers
96 x 180 x 96"
This three part sculpture is a site for the passage of memory and of history, into the activity and intelligence of the future. The ball on the left is a marker for the life of the past. The middle element of hanging screen is the area for memory storage, and function. The right, forward-most element supports many nestled cups, into which viewers have been asked to place written notes (to be read by others who will also contribute notes). The movement of this third element of the installation, based in the immediacy of the present, is in the direction of the future of created, collective and personal meaning.
