30 St/10 Ave Project

This sculptural object installed under the truck in the RIDER Project exhibit, Cannibalize, a mobile art show—and in an hotel suite bathroom at the Pool Art Fair, 2005—is a 50 ft replica of the 300 ft sidewalk median that divides 30th St, between 9th and 10th Ave, New York City.

I encounter this concrete sidewalk median as I walk from my apartment to my studio down 10th Avenue. The median has an expanded shape at either end—one triangular and the other oblong—and meets the overhang of the High Line elevated railway at its west end, forming a natural opening, and providing a pausing place in the landscape of Far West Side transportation arteries and commercial architecture.

The median “replica” sculpture bears a literalness of form familiar to everyday urban living, while its installation—facilitated by its pliable form, is a response to the present site—allowing for a manifestation which is in different measures personally responsive, arbitrary and collaborative.
