The Ambulation Project is an urban project, generated out of living in a city. It takes art outdoors, creating a dialogue between art, architecture and urban spaces, and the lives that created these urban spaces through intention and habitation. The beginning point of the project is that of everyday walking in the city—the perspective of the pedestrian. In pursuing the project, the artist, performer, also becomes a spy, a commentator, a documentarian
and a storyteller.
The area explored in the Ambulation Project is New York City’s West Side, between 20 St and 50 St. A mobile anti-monument, in the form of a pliable orange sculpture, is placed in the environment. This connector and pointer, is a sewn map of a particular city block, its chosen schema suggestive to the artist of a fluid identity in the city. A companion to the artist’s forays into the environment, the orange map through photography, becomes a pivot point and emblem—keying and tagging interactive urban narratives.
